Lord Krishna and Yadavas leave
Mathura and arrive at the sea-coast of Saurashtra
and they decide to build capital city on the large
coastal area. They invoke god Vishwakarma, the
builder of cities. Vishwakarma tells them the city
of Dwaraka could be built only if the sea god
dedicate some of his land. Lord Krishna then invokes
the sea-god. The sea-god is pleased and dedicates 12
'Jojan' land. The gold city of Dwaraka is built on
the land. The city also comes to be known as
Daravati and Kushasthali.
According to another
myth, when Lord Krishna got injured by an arrow of a
hunter at Bhalaka Tirth near Somnath at the fag end
of his life and left his mortal body at the "Triveny
Sangam" (The meeting place of three rivers or
revaluates), the ancient city of Dwaraka sunk in the
belly of the sea.
Capital city built by Loard Krishna, the epoch
making god who sang and spread the glory of Indian
Culture.
Dwaraka is situated at the western end of Gujarat
State on the coast of Sindhusagar (Arabian Sea). It
is an ancient place of pilgrimage associated with
the mythical tales of the life of Lord Krishna.
Dwaraka is believed to be a city of Salavation.
Therefore, the flow of devotee Hindu pilgrims
continues throughout the year at this place. They
come here to seek "Darshana" (a glimpse) of the
place where Lord Krishna ruled for a long time. Lord
Krishna met his childhood friend Sudama at the
island of Dwaraka (Beyt Dwaraka). Meerabai, the
devout worshiper of Lord Krishna also breathed her
last at this holy place. It is believed that the
ancient Dwaraka city was built in gold by Lord
Krishna and it later sank in the sea. After Lord
Krishna, Dwaraka was ruled by various dynasties like
the Guptas, the Pallavas, the Chalukya etc.
Situated at the meeting place of river Gomati and
Sindhusagar (Arabian Sea), Dwaraka is famous for its
Jagat Mandir (Temple) The temple is believed to be
2500 years old. The height of this five storied
temple is 160 ft. The original temple was believed
to have been built within 24 hours by god
Vishwakarma at the command of Lord Krishna. That
temple does not exist today. The present temple is a
marvel of stone work and sculpting. The dome of the
temple is placed on eight pillars. The walls outside
the temple are built with stone with exquisite
carving. In the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, an
idol of Lord Krishna has been placed on a silver
plated throne. The idol has been carved in a black
stone and it has four arms. Govt. of Gujarat has
accepted in principle the scheme to construct a
bridge between Okha and Beyt Dwaraka.
